What to know about equestrian at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Equestrian at the 2024 Paris Olympics will feature three disciplines: dressage, eventing, and show jumping. In dressage, expect to see precise, elegant movements as riders guide their horses through their routine. Eventing will test the versatility and endurance of both the horse and rider across dressage, cross country and show jumping phases. Finally, jumping will provide thrilling moments as competitors navigate a course of obstacles, aiming for speed and accuracy.

Germany and Great Britain have dominated the sport, winning a combined nine Olympic medals in Tokyo, including five out of six possible gold. Both countries are primed to have great success once again at the Games.

Notable athletes to watch in Paris are Great Britian's Laura Collett, who won a team eventing gold medal in Tokyo. Collett has a remarkable story, overcoming a near fatal fall from her horse in 2013. Collett had to be resuscitated five times and given an emergency tracheotomy by paramedics after suffering a fractured shoulder, broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated liver and damage to her kidneys. Also, a fragment of her shoulder bone had detached and travelled to her right eye through her blood stream and damaged the optic nerve. She was placed in an induced coma for six days but was back in the saddle the day she returned home. Collett and the British team will look to defend its eventing team gold in Paris.

Also from Great Britain, Ben Maher will look to defend his individual jumping gold medal and secure his third Olympic title overall.

From Germany, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl will hope to defend her individual and team dressage gold medals from Tokyo, likely alongside seven-time Olympic gold medalist Isabell Werth.

Looking to help defend the United States' dressage team silver from Tokyo will be three-time Olympic medalist Steffen Peters, who will make his sixth Olympic appearance in Paris. (At age 59, Peters is the oldest U.S. Olympian since 1936 when the U.S. had competitors in the art competitions, according to OlyMADMen.) Peters will be joined by Tokyo team silver medalist Adrienne Lyle, who will make her third appearance at the Games, and Marcus Orlob, who will make his Olympic debut in Paris.
