The sword that was introduced was modelled on the 1803 pattern infantry sabre that was previously carried by Navy and Marine officers.

The 1805 naval pattern sword was fitted with a 32″ straight spadroon blade although some were made shorter. It came with two distinct hilts depending on rank, but neither had a curved blade.
